- [ ] Introduction
- [ ] Outline procedure and warn about any discomfort → ‘I will inflate a cuff around your upper arm, it will feel like a tight band around your arm, but should not last too long’
- [ ] Seek permission to take their blood pressure
Prepare Sphygmomanometer
- [ ] Place the Sphygmomanometer on surface with dial facing you
- [ ] Select appropriate cuff size (bladder at least 80% of circumference of arm)
- [ ] Disconnect tubing and squeeze out excess air from cuff
- [ ] Ensure dial is centred at ‘0’
Position Patient Correctly
- [ ] Ensure patient is seated & relaxed
- [ ] Patient’s upper arm fully exposed
- [ ] Arm should be supported by table level with heart
Apply BP Cuff
- [ ] Apply cuff around arm so that one finger can be inserted between cuff and arm
- [ ] Cuff bladder should be centred over cubital fossa but tubing should not interfere with stethoscope
- Apply cuff as high as possible to there’s enough space for stethoscope
- [ ] Reconnect tubes
- [ ] Close valve of the inflation bulb
